A Future in Time
Reimagining Systems Through Speculative Design Futures
BackgroundAs part of the exhibition A Future in Time at the Royal College of Art, I conducted an interactive scenario-building workshop titled ‘Exploring Future Scenarios of the Digital Pound.’ Grounded in my project EcoPound, the workshop invited participants to envision how a Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC) could shape London’s social, economic and ecological fabric by 2050.
Using a bespoke deck-based toolkit, 35+ participants selected Time Periods, Themes, Places and Personas to co-create speculative narratives around the digital pound. Prompt cards and scenario boards facilitated dynamic collaboration, allowing guests to map complex impacts—such as surveillance, regeneration, mobility or inequity—across six key dimensions: Environmental, Social, Economic, Political, Technological and Legal.
Sticky-note contributions revealed nuanced, sometimes conflicting visions of the future—from river-based local currencies to tax incentives tied to sustainability. The workshop embodied design futures methodology, turning abstract policy debates into tangible, participatory speculation—ultimately reframing digital money as a tool for regenerative urban futures.
